ARTIST BIOS
KAETLYN ABLE
I love observing, learning and wondering about wildlife of all kinds. I’m especially interested in human-animal similarities and connections. What does it feel like to be a bighorn sheep, a chipmunk, a bumblebee? I’m also drawn to botanical-inspired surface patterns, which can suggest human's separateness from nature as well as our longing to be one with it. My most visceral love is for flowers. Spending time looking at them closely floods me with peace and wonder. Their symbolism is central to my world view that life is beautiful largely because it is so fleeting. Conceptually I am interested in the garden as a bridge between the human and natural worlds.
—Kaetlyn Able
Kaetlyn Able grew up in the suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts. She holds a BA in Studio Art from Wellesley College and an MFA from the Museum School, Boston, in affiliation with Tufts University. In 2011 she moved to Montana with her young family. She has exhibited her work throughout New England, New York, Montana and Washington. Today she draws and paints full time from her home studio in Bozeman.
JENNIFER INDRELAND
For many years a real sense of ‘home’ was elusive to me. But now, partially due to my family’s history, and also from felt memories of my family's ranch on Red Lodge Creek, I do experience a sense of belonging. The land there is scattered with old farm equipment, sheds, animal bones, homestead cabins and other abandoned and decaying relics. I'm interested in combining iconic Western imagery with symbolism that is part of my personal vocabulary in order to elicit new meanings and associations.
—Jennifer Indreland
Jennifer Indreland was born in Denver, Colorado, and moved frequently while growing up. After attending high school in England, she earned a BFA in painting from Rhode Island School of Design and settled on the East Coast. Every summer throughout her nomadic childhood, she returned to a ranch in Montana that has been in her family for four generations. After many years away, she moved to Billings where she currently lives with her twin sons. Indreland's work is influenced by folk tales, medieval art, Victorian lithographs, the Western landscapes of her childhood, and the strange beauty she finds in the darker corners of history.
JARED SHEAR
I have always been fascinated with using visuals to express ideas, stories, and experiences. Much like poetry and music, there are certain things that can only be expressed visually. The lens through which I perceive the world is unique to me. These images allow you, the viewer, to see and understand the world through my eyes; they offer you a small glimpse into my reality.
—Jared Shear
Jared Shear was born in Missoula, Montana, and has a degree in Animation from the Art Institute of Seattle. Shear has participated in gallery and museum exhibitions throughout the Northwest, including “Extreme Plein Air” at the Lewis-Clark State College Center for Arts and History, “Cougar Peak-A-Boo,” a solo show at the Missoula Art Museum, as well as 25+ large and small group exhibitions. His work has been featured in Artist & Illustrator magazine and Spectrum. Shear lives and works in Thompson Falls, Montana, with his wife and children.
DAVID SWENSON
My work is about nostalgia and play. These pieces are meant to evoke feelings of times past, and to revere certain motifs and patterns from historical decorative arts. They offer a contemporary perspective on those traditions while recontextualizing their content. These objects are meant to be functional and entertaining, to embellish the home and daily practices.
—David Swenson
David Swenson is a ceramic artist originally from Rhode Island. He relocated to Minnesota in 2009 after receiving a Fogelberg Fellowship from Northern Clay Center. Before that he studied ceramics at Töpferei Dambeck in Germany, and decorative techniques in Deruta, Italy, and Bergen, Norway. In 2012 he received a Minnesota State Arts board grant to research the integration of his ceramics with sonic arts. He has been a visiting artist and lecturer at the University of Minnesota, the University of Wisconsin, and The School of the Art Institute in Chicago. He actively teaches in community education and after-school programs in the Twin Cities and surrounding areas.
